New points system in F1

Well each year the FIA(the Formula one governing body) throws up a twist or two before the start of the season. In the previous seasons the twists came pretty early in the mix, during the winter breaks, but this time around the twist has come pretty late in the piece.

On tuesday FIA has announced that the F1 driver's championship for this year would be decided by the number of wins scored by the driver and not by number of points earned. IS this decision right??????

Well according to the new rule, say if a driver wins 7 races and in the rest of the races he didn't even finish, he would have got 70 points and there is another driver who won 2 races , finished in the podium in every other race, he would have scored loads of points but still he would come only second in the championship. Is this the way to reward consistency????? I wonder!!!!!!!!Will this rule make drivers more conservative??????// Drivers might target specific circuits to win the races rather than concentarting on the entire season........ WEll the first race is only a few days away, time will tell us the answers for all of our questions.

I don't know what prompted FIA to take this decision. IF this rule was there from the start of F1 champioship the F1 world would have senn lots of differrent champions. Senna wolud have been a quadraple world champion and last year his country man Felippe Massa would have won the world title and not Lewis hamilton.

I believe the FIA is trying desperately to make the sport interesting amidst all this financial crisis, but it is making the sport a bit more complicated and difficult to follw with changes every year.

I am very much against the new system introduced by the FIA. You know, it’s totally biased. Heck! The system benefits only the champion. While it’s bleak for those who are off the pace. If the FIA wishes to make the points distribution tougher, it must devise a new system instead of amending the existing one. Phooey! We can do nothing but discuss on FIA’s proposals. I strongly recommend the organization to revert to the old system or rather bring out an entirely new “unbiased” system.

I'm not only against it but also amazed by the new system. I'm amazed to see the FIA saying that these rule changes would make the championship much more competitive and interesting......
I wonder , how???

Guys, I'm afraid I don't share your views. For me it's a right move what the FIA did. The points system thus far has been rewarding consistency and I think it's a bit ridiculous. It's perfectly right in my mind that the champion is the one who has won the most races and that's because it's winning the race that involves taking most risks. Secondly, to answer Prakash's question, if the driver is forced to win as many races as possible he simply won't settle for the relatively easy points paying positions (as Alonso routinely used to in 2005 or Hamilton did in Brazil). Wouldn't you have loved to see Hamilton racing Massa in Brazil or are happy to see him scrapping for a 5th place finish? Plus, the lower placed teams won't suffer because the current points system is exactly the same for them. So no question of TV revenues lost or points lost. And, Hari, off pace people are anyway not going to aim for the title. They'll look to scoring points (and thus money) and they're not affected.
